The Institute of Distance Education provides educational and training opportunities for individuals who are unable to undertake conventional university programmes and courses. The Distance Education (DE) system involves teaching and learning at a distance with a package of multimedia instructional materials. It is learner-oriented and enables the learner to learn independently at a distance at his/her own pace and place.

As part of the University Strategic Plan (2018-2022), the IDE has focused on implementing Blended Learning (BL), which combines online digital media with traditional classroom method through offering components of courses by an electronic learning platfom.
Study materials are made available through print and electronic media for access and use by distance education students, lecturers and tutors.
Learning centres have also been organised in Manzini, Nhlangano, Pigg's Peak and Siteki to improve easy access to study materials for our students. The Learning Centres will be officially launched soon.
The vision of the Institute of Distance Education is to be an international centre of excellence in distance education access, delivery, practice, research and life-long learning.
The mission of the Institute of Distance Education is to increase access to tertiary education by providing demand-driven educational and training opportunities to individuals (employed, self-employed, unemployed and school leavers) by offering them quality short and long term credit and non-credit courses using the distance education delivery mode.

IDE offers Undergraduate Higher Certificates, Undergraduate Diploma and Degree Certificates; as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. This year we have new programmes to be offered in August 2019. We work tirelessly to bring you the programmes you need.

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B.Sc. IT) Degree in the Faculty of
Science and Engineering will now be offered in the Institute of Distance Education beginning Aug. 2019
IDE will, from August 2019, offer the Bachelor of Nursing Science in response to the need expressed by already employed nurses who want to further their studies but cannot do so on a full-time basis.
